This kit is a quick, neat and inexpensive way to provide a regulated, dual polarity DC power supply to a project in the range +/- 5 to 18Vdc/1A.
The kit provides a universal PCB for mounting any pair of 78xx (positive) and 79xx (negative) series 3 terminal regulators. The regulators must be used in positive and negative pairs but they do not have to have matching voltages (e.g. you can use a +5V and a -12V regulator together). Each regulator can provide up to 1A load current and features on-chip protection circuitry that simple shuts the chip down in the event of over heating or excessive current.
The kit comes with heatsinks, 4A bridge rectifier, smoothing capacitors, 2 x LED power indicators and input/output terminal blocks. The input voltage needs to be 3V above the required output voltage for proper operation.
The user supplies any pair of 78xx and 79xx series regulators from 5 to 18V (i.e. 7805 & 7905, 7808 & 7908, 7812 & 7912, 7815 & 7915, 7818 &7918) and a centre tapped transformer with a power output rated at 7VA minimum.
Product selection advice: Please ensure the equipment under power draws less current than the power supplies maximum rated current detailed below (do not rely on equipment rating specifications as they are often incorrect). We recommend that the power supply is rated at least 20% above the equipment to be powered so it can handle current surges, etc.
